The Lodge

A lodge that feels suspended above the Mara

Angama Mara sits on the edge of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, high above the Mara Triangle. Its Swahili-inspired name refers to being “suspended in mid-air”, and the feeling is immediate: red accents, open decks, cinematic skies, and a long view across one of the world’s most recognisable safari landscapes.

The lodge is built as two intimate camps of fifteen tented suites each. This gives Angama Mara the scale and polish of a serious luxury lodge while keeping the guest experience personal, calm, and well-paced. It works especially well for honeymooners, families, photographers, private groups, and guests who want the Mara without a heavy lodge atmosphere.

Through The Luxury Africa DMC, Angama Mara can be planned as a pure Maasai Mara stay or as part of a longer Kenya route with Nairobi, Amboseli, Laikipia, Samburu, the Serengeti, Zanzibar, or gorilla trekking. Internal flights can be checked at theluxuryafrica.com/flight-bookings.

The Experience

High above the Mara — designed for light, space and rhythm

Angama Mara is not only a place to sleep. It is a safari base where the view, the suite, the food, the guiding and the daily timing all need to work together.

Planning note from our DMC team For most private clients, Angama Mara works best with 3 to 5 nights. Three nights gives you a clean first Mara experience; four or five nights gives space for private vehicle use, photography, walking, slower lunches and a better chance to respond to wildlife movement.
Accommodation

Tented suites — space, view and Angama character

Wildlife & Safari

Why the Mara still feels serious and cinematic

Angama Mara gives you year-round resident game with the seasonal drama of the Great Migration. The value is not only sightings, but timing: light, access, vehicle rhythm and guide judgement.

Resident Wildlife

Elephants, cats, plains game and the Big Five

The Maasai Mara holds strong year-round wildlife: elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelope and hyena. For clients who want the Mara without relying only on the Migration, Angama Mara remains a strong choice outside peak months.

Our planning emphasis is simple: avoid rushed two-night stays if the client wants a private vehicle, photography, relaxed lodge time, walking or a higher chance of predator behaviour.

Predators & Photography

Big cat country with photographic depth

Lions, leopards and cheetahs are part of the Mara’s strongest appeal. A private vehicle can be helpful for serious photographers because you control waiting time, angles, morning starts and how long you stay with a sighting.

For guests who want a strong photographic safari, we generally recommend at least four nights, especially from July to September and during festive peak dates.

The strongest drives often depend on timing, patience and not overloading the day.

Strong safari with more breathing room

A good balance between rate, wildlife and experience. June and October can be excellent for serious safari clients without the heaviest peak pressure.

Sample Planning

How Angama Mara fits into a safari

These are sample rhythms. We quote the final version based on dates, arrival airport, airstrip routing, private vehicle requirement and onward itinerary.

Day01

Fly to the Mara and settle above the escarpment

Arrive at Kichwa Tembo Airstrip and transfer to Angama Mara. Depending on the flight time, you either settle into lunch and an afternoon game drive, or keep the first day slower with views, suite time and sunset from the lodge.

Day02

Full Mara Triangle safari day

Start early for a guided safari into the Mara Triangle. This is the strongest day for predator tracking, plains game, elephant movement and Migration positioning in season. Return for lunch and choose a softer afternoon drive or lodge time.

Day03

Escarpment walk, photography or private vehicle focus

Use the morning for a walking safari on the Oloololo Escarpment or another focused game drive. For serious photographers, this is the day where a private vehicle can be valuable because the guide can hold longer at a sighting.

Day04

Depart or connect onward

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for Nairobi or an onward connection. This routing also links well with Amboseli, Laikipia, Samburu or Tanzania if we are building a cross-border East Africa itinerary.

Day01

Arrival into the Mara

Fly from Nairobi or another safari region into Kichwa Tembo Airstrip. Transfer to Angama Mara, settle into the suite, and use the first afternoon for orientation, view time and an easy introduction to the lodge rhythm.

Day02

Big cat and plains game drive

Begin early while temperatures are cooler and predators are more active. This is a strong day for lions, cheetahs, elephants and general Mara wildlife. Return for a proper lunch and a less rushed afternoon.

Day03

Walking safari and on-property experiences

Balance game driving with an escarpment walk, photographic studio time, the Shamba, beading or a slower lodge-based day. This keeps the stay from becoming repetitive and allows Angama’s non-vehicle experiences to matter.

Day04

Private vehicle or migration focus

In July to September, this day is useful for responding to herd movement. Outside migration months, it is an excellent day for photographic patience or returning to a strong predator area from the previous drive.

Day05

Final breakfast and onward flight

Depart after breakfast or plan a later flight if the onward route allows it. Our team aligns this with flight availability and the next lodge or international departure.

Day01

Arrival and slow lodge introduction

Fly to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip and settle into Angama Mara. Use the arrival day to recover from travel, orient yourself, enjoy the view and begin the safari without forcing the pace.

Day02

First full safari day

Morning and afternoon game drives establish the wildlife pattern. The guide can assess current predator territories, elephant movement and any seasonal Migration direction.

Day03

Escarpment walking and lodge depth

A walking safari adds a different scale to the trip. Instead of staying only inside a vehicle, guests read tracks, vegetation, birds, Maasai stories and the geography of the escarpment.

Day04

Private vehicle photography day

This is the day to wait. Serious wildlife photography often needs patience at a single sighting. A private vehicle allows longer positioning, softer decision-making and better control of the safari rhythm.

Day05

Final full Mara day

Return to the area that produced the strongest wildlife activity earlier in the stay. If travelling during the Migration, this day can be used to follow herd movement or position for the best crossing probability.

Day06

Depart or continue across East Africa

Fly back to Nairobi or continue into Amboseli, Laikipia, Samburu, the Serengeti, Zanzibar or Rwanda. We align the route with exact flight schedules and seasonal wildlife logic.
